It is crew’s duty to systematically evacuate guests and respond emergency correctly. So when crew member start to working onboard a cruise ship, they will start with a safety meeting.

  • Abandon Ship & Survival Techniques
  • Fire prevention & Fire Fighting

  • Security Awareness Training
  • Casualty Management

It is imperative that the crew know their duties in case of an emergency and where they need to assemble in case the Captain gives the order to abandon ship. Through training, the crew will learn their own safety number, codes which are used for different situations, assigned duties for each of those, the location of life boats and life rafts, how to launch them and etc. Different cruise ships have different Safety features with which the crew will need to be familiar with. For example, the crew will learn how to operate a watertight door, a fire screen door, and what to do if they see someone fall overboard. When the crew discovers a fire onboard, they will know how to find correct kind of fire-extinguishers to be used. To learn all critical knowledge above requires the crew to participate trainnings onboard.

Besides this basic safety training, most crew members require a course and certificate in Basic Firefighting, Survival at Sea and Basic First Aid (often referred to as STCW). Some cruise lines have the possibility to do this training onboard, others will advise the candidates to take those courses in their home country before joining the ship.

To efficiently manage crowd, the relevant trainings are conducted onboard. For example, managers often need a Crowd and Crisis management course.

To make sure all crew members familiarize emergency procedure, it is compulsory to participate it in weekly basis. Yes, it is “Compulsory Crew Drill”. Each crew member is requested to participate unless the crew got permission from captain directly. Beside of the Crew Drill, the passenger drill is necessary to participate, too. This drill will be held during embarkation day of each voyage.

As you can see, there is a lot more to learn, than just doing your job and to find your way around the ship. Even though the safety training is often seen as an unpopular task, which just needs to be done, please keep in mind that all this training is for your safety. This training will give you a chance to save your life and that of others, in case of an emergency.

Happy sailing!

The Essential Training includes critical company policy, enterprise business core and some cruise-knowledge-related classes.

Among them, the Zero Tolerance Policy is the most important. If anyone violates the Zero Tolerance Policy, he or she will be dismissed without any exemption. In most cruise companies, there are some common Zero Tolerance Policy as followings.

For example, Costa Cruises implemented zero tolerance alcohol policy for employees working in the engine department, bridge officers, medical and deck department. This means that they are not allowed have alcohol in the crew bar, disco or any bars aboard the ship. If the officer is tested positive on alco-test he or she will be terminated from the company. Usually, most cruise lines set at certain percentage, like 0.04%, of blood alcohol concentration as the legal limit, which allowed employees
  • Zero tolerance drug policy with random testing: Drug possession, transportation and usage are causes for immediate termination.
  • Zero tolerance for harassment of any nature: Every crew member is responsible for keeping a safe, harmonious environment onboard.

The crew is ambassador of company’s spirit. It is vital that all crew members understand and conduct the business core while serving the guests. Crew Admin Department will design several lecture, training, activities and even competition with praise to inspire and encourage the crew members. Take Celebrity Cruise for example, they train the crew to truly enliven the STAR principles. So the crew can bring meaning to the Celebrity experience.

Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students.

There are plenty advantages of mentoring program. A mentoring program makes a business decision having exclusively positive effect. Mentoring can improve employee satisfaction and retention, enrich new-employee initiation, make the company more appealing to recruits, and train the future leaders. And the best part is, it's free. Unlike similar learning incentives like training programs or offering to pay for courses, mentoring utilizes the resources that your company already has.

For the newcomers, they can learn job skills, familiarize work procedure, know job duties and surviving skills from the mentor. The newcomers can utilize this opportunity to try errors and ask millions of questions. The team usually can tolerate small mistakes during the first contract. Moreover, the mentors often become the first support power of the newcomers. It is indeed warm and encouraging that someone tells you,” Well, it is a different world but I believe you can make it.” Remember, the earlier the newcomers become independent, the earlier they can enjoy the beauty of cruise life.

For the mentors, it is the great chance to show their leader potentials and abilities. Usually, the candidates of assistance manger will start with coaching the newcomers. If they can successfully train the newcomers become great support of the team, the mentors prove their management skills well.
