(Accurate Salary will be noted once the candidate officially hired/ Principal Auctioneer’s earnings are determined by an uncapped commission structure with guaranteed base earnings. A six-figure yearly income is common under this model)

Job Overview:
The Principle Art Auctioneer is the head of the Art Department and is responsible for managing all sales related to art on board the ship - promotion, direct sales and hosted live auctions. He/ She will conduct the auction in well organized, fast-paced and entertaining manner reaching a broad spectrum of perspective bidders and (eventually) buyers.

Responsibilities and Duties include (but are not limited to)
  • Individually conducts auctions in an enthusiastic and entertaining fashion
  • Manages a multicultural art team in a professional and motivational manner, much like an entrepreneur or small business owner
  • Demonstrates at all times an in-depth knowledge about individual items, the respective artist and in fine arts in general.
  • Maintains a positive working relationship with cruise ship and shoreside management while functioning as the department head for the onboard art program
  • Continually strategizes and improves programming, auction techniques, and collection promotion
  • Designs and presents educational art history seminars
  • Creates and executes an effective marketing plan and gear all activities toward its implementation
  • Manages the presentational and financial aspects of art auctioning
  • Be responsible for the on-the-job training of the assigned Associate Auctioneers passing to them knowledge, skills and secrets of the trade and making sure that they gradually become capable of assuming the role of Principle Art Auctioneer.
  • Constantly interact with passengers in all public areas of the ship - atrium, lounges, bars, open decks etc. initiating conversations, educating guests on fine art, actively looking for art patrons and collectors, pointing out places and times of auctions and presentations, describing available paintings and other pieces of art in order to maximize sales revenue.
  • Develops and coordinates marketing strategies for cross-sales in conjunction with other departments on board the cruise ship - Gift Shops, Photo, Food and Beverage, Spa, Casino, Entertainment etc. organizing mutually beneficial events and raising the awareness and interest of potential customers to available pieces of art.
  • Involves certain administrative duties, as well - maintaining records of all sales (direct or via live auction) and inventory transactions.
  • Completes all documents and certificates of authenticity accompanying each piece of art, required by shipboard or / and shore side authorities.
  • Receives and offloads inventory (with the help of the Associate Auctioneer and Art Stewards)
  • Organizes the shipping of purchased items to the costumer address.

  • ExperienceFine arts gallery, auction sales experience and proven sales record preferred
  • Education level
    • High school diploma or higher is preferred.
    • Degree or Diploma in Art related is an asset.

    • Excellent verbal and written command of the English language
    • Ability to speak additional languages such as Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese preferred.
    •  Must be about to speak English plus at least one of the following languages to a conversational/business level (Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese)
  • Physical abilities
    • Must meet all physical requirements, including the ability to participate in emergency life-saving drills and required training.
    • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Career Prospects
    • Joining the Shoreside Management:  Advanced auctioneers may have the opportunity to join other departments, including Fleet Management, Marketing, and Recruiting.
    • Representing International Auction Team: Qualified auctioneers may have the opportunity to join a land-based sales team.
