Day in the Life of a General Technician

Job Overview:
The Lounge Technician is responsible for the set-up and operation of a wide variety of Audio/Visual equipment required to support various activities, shows and Variety Artists. The technician will also resolve immediate technical issues,  perform preventive maintenance & general cleaning of all technical entertainment equipment, including safe and proper storage. The Lounge Technician is expected to maintain and inspect all equipment and to track inventory in order to ensure that all props and items are available for the shows. This person must also be available to assist other technicians whenever needed

Responsibilities and Duties 
include (but are not limited to)
  • Operate the sound, light and video entertainment equipment in the lounges and in the pool area, always keeping in mind that the equipment is the property of the ship and is used under the control of the Engine Department.
  • Work primarily on the sound and light consoles in the lounges and by the pool.
  • Perform and maintain high quality audio and lighting effects for events and cabaret artists.
  • Assist Musicians, Cruise Staff, Hosts/Hostess and Lecturers, in other words all personnel who presents activities, preparing the technical equipment and checking the quality of the sound and light in such a way that they are suitable for the activity in question.
  • Program the background music selected for the various lounges following the schedule received from his/her superiors.
  • Maintain and update records of all shows and changes to backstage tracks & rigging & scenic changes to backstage tracks.
  • Maintain and update auditable inventory of all entertainment props and equipment.
  • Check that the batteries for the various microphones are always charged before any planned activity and cleaning the microphones before putting them away in their assigned locker.
  • Show maximum attention and care to the security procedures on board, being aware that any incorrect usage or modifications to circuits may cause serious damage and danger to the personnel involved.
  • Record incidents of damaged or broken equipment and reports them to the Technical Supervisor and Electronics Engineer Jr. for resolution
  • Experience
    • Theater background and experience, be familiar with industry terms, standards, rules, regulations and common practices prferred.
    • Minimum of two years experience in operation of entertainment audio and lighting equipment in a bar/lounge/comedy and theatrical environment prferred.
  • Education level
    • High school diploma or foreign equivalent is preferred.
    • Associates degree or foreign equivalent is preferred.
    • Background in electrical, technical, light and sound preferred.
    • Degree or Diploma in Technical Theater, Sound, Lights, A/V,  education, recreation or related field is an asset.
  • Specific skills & Knowledge
    • Intermediate to Advanced knowledge of theatrical audio, lighting systems
    • Good knowledge of sound systems, audio consoles, audio editing, live mixing, lighting systems, light consoles, video projection.
    • Good knowledge of electrical theory, be able to read and follow electrical and system drawings and diagrams.
    • Good knowledge of intelligent moving fixtures operation, maintenance and repair procedures.
    • Good knowledge of lighting console operation (GrandMa, GrandMa2, ETC)
    • Good knowledge and understanding of show control and time code distribution
    • Basic knowledge of lighting design and programming
    • Basic knowledge in PC hardware & software maintenance and repair
    • Capability of enjoying a fast-paced and dynamic work environment

    • Capability of being personable and maintain a professional demeanor and appearance
  • Language
    • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests
    • Ability to communicate in English to understand, interpret written procedures, give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers
    • Excellent verbal and written command of the English language
    • Ability to speak additional languages such as Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Italian or Portuguese preferred.
    •  Must be about to speak English plus at least one of the following languages to a conversational/business level (Chinese, French, German, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese)

    • Comfortable working at heights up to 35ft (10.5m), be able to safely climb an A‐frame ladder and properly operate a Genie lift
    • Must meet all physical requirements, including the ability to participate in emergency life-saving drills and required training.

    • Specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
